Petition: Demand Better Buses

Flintshire County Council: Establish a local bus company to deliver public transport for the public, not private profit.

Bus services have been cut back across Flintshire. Some communities have been cut off entirely, other services don’t run before 9am or after 5pm, making them useless for workers. The council’s Labour-Independent coalition even considered scrapping all council bus funding in their budget – but were stopped by the hard lobbying of Flintshire People’s Voice councillors. Meanwhile, overseas shareholders suck profits out, and invest little back.

There is a solution. We’re calling for a local, publicly owned bus company. This will use money from profitable routes to deliver services that connect local villages, but which run at a loss. It will cost no more than the council currently spends on transport.

This isn’t a radical proposal – it’s how buses still operate in other parts of the UK. But the current council sees this as “too ambitious”. Flintshire People’s Voice believes that a lack of ambition is no excuse for failing to fix the problems that affect the people of Flintshire.
